A fusion of indie whimsy, with pop fantasy/comedy/action genre.
Big Trouble in Little China meets Frances Ha meets Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.

The idea is for Spirit and Bone to have a strong visual style. The center piece, the fight, is a tough and physically skillful affair. Though inspired by Chinese operatic styles, it veers more into the Hong Kong Jackie Chan era style from the 80's rather than the Shaw brothers movies of the 70's.
Irreverent and silly at points but not too over the top. Should complement in contrast some of the darker elements of the film. This could be seen as the budding of a 'buddy cop' genre film, though they're not cops.
'Action Heros' are often portrayed as stoic or one dimensional characters in a film where the action takes the main stage. Silly, playful... a hero with a ridiculous, artistic and maybe very unrealistic dream like the protagonist in France Ha?
"All art is poetry!" Someone probably quite famous probably said once. Really exploring and playing with sound design, editing and image to create an action comedy drama with some poetic resonance.
